Open positions
Team Leader

• A holder of Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

• Have the appropriate knowledge and experience to supervise and carry out the research projects described in [Research Field].

Work location
RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (Yokohama Campus)
1-7-22 Suehiro-cho, Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa, 230-0045, Japan

Research field
RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) views the life of an individual, from birth to death, as a dynamic process of development, maintenance, and failure of complex systems of molecules, cells and organs.
We aim to understand the general principles of organismal temporal dynamics throughout the lifespan from birth to death, including aging, under an umbrella field we refer to as “Life Cycle Sciences”. Our interdisciplinary approaches include structural biology, computational science, imaging, multi-omics, theory, molecular biology, stem cell biology, organoids, and diverse animal models.
We are seeking to recruit Team Leaders who will pioneer the next-generation of structural life sciences and conduct cutting-edge research based on biomolecular structures and their analysis. The field of molecular life science is undergoing a major transition, as seen in the recent advances in cryo-electron microscopy technology and the development of machine-learning based approaches such as AlphaFold2. There is a growing trend to understand life by seamlessly connecting molecules, organelles and cells through the analysis of biomolecular complexes and meso-scale structures formed in cells. In this context, there is a need for researchers who are aware of the hierarchical and temporally changing nature of life to lead research to bridge the gap between biological phenomena and molecular mechanisms using state-of-the-art technology. We encourage proposals based on advanced structural biology approaches, computational approaches such as molecular dynamics, and synthetic approaches such as molecular design and drug discovery, and especially those that combine multiple methodologies.
BDR provides an excellent environment for independent early-career Team Leaders, including internationally competitive start-up packages, and annual research funds and mentoring by experienced senior PIs. The Team Leaders will have access to cutting-edge instruments and facilities, including cryo-electron microscopy, NMR, supercomputers such as Fugaku, MDGRAPE-4A, various animal models, mouse genome engineering, multi-scale imaging and omics, and structural biology. They will also have opportunities for active collaborations with medical institutions, industry, and affiliated graduate schools. For more information, please visit the BDR website.
We welcome applications from candidates of any gender or nationality, and encourage applications from those who will broaden RIKEN's diversity. The working language for all discussions open to BDR members is English.

Applications must arrive no later than noon, June 20, 2022 (Japan Standard Time)

Start of employment
Negotiable (After April 1, 2023)

A postdoctoral associate position is available to study the molecular and circuit basis of sleep. We use sophisticated genetic approaches in Drosophila and mice to study the genes and circuitry underlying sleep, a fundamental and evolutionary conserved behavior. We are currently studying homeostatic and circadian mechanisms regulating sleep, but also have broad interests in understanding the functions of sleep. To carry out these studies, we combine molecular and genetic approaches with high throughput behavioral assays, immunohistochemical techniques, patch-clamp electrophysiology, and in vivo functional imaging. Applicants should have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. and be creative and highly motivated. A strong background in electrophysiology is desirable. For more information, please visit our website:
