Nano Life Science Institute (WPI-NanoLSI) at Kanazawa University was launched in October 2017, with a support of World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) program by MEXT, Japan. At NanoLSI, we are developing various bio-scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques for visualizing nanoscale structures, dynamics and functions of biomolecules and cells. With the developed techniques, we are investigating nanoscale mechanisms of protein dynamics, cellular functions, and diseases.
We are looking for an excellent researcher who can work on the following research subjects as an "Assistant Professor" at NanoLSI.

Main Duties:
At the Prof. Shibata’s laboratory, researchers from a wide variety of fields cooperatively promote cutting-edge research aiming to uncover biological questions by using high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM). Candidates are not required to have an experience of AFM study, however, candidates should have experiences in any one of the following research fields; biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, neurobiology and cell biology.
【Specific research contents】

① We have visualized morphological dynamics of living mammalian cells by HS-AFM [Shibata et al. Sci. Rep. 5, 8724, (2015)]. Using HS-AFM combined with optical microscope, dynamic morphological changes and a protein localization of living mammalian cells will be investigated.

② We recently visualized a real-space and real-time dynamics of DNA cleavage reaction of CRISPR-Cas9 by using HS-AFM [Shibata et al. Nat. Commun. 8, 1430 (2017)]. To expand this projects, visualization of dynamics of various proteins, including membrane proteins, protein kinases and nucleases, will be investigated.

(1) Genomic Diversity and Evolution
We are interested in investigating the evolutionary history of species and populations such as adaptation and demographic history by comparing population-scale genomes.

(2) Connecting Genome to Phenotype
We are interested in investigating how genetic variants contribute to phenotypic diversity in the view of evolution. We use functional genomics toolsets, such as RNA-sequencing and genome-wide association study to investigate this question.

The laboratory for Commensal Microbiome Research aims to develop and advance analytical technologies for metagenomic analyses, including those for DNA sequencing and bioinformatic strategies, of the commensal microbiome (bacteria, fungi, viruses, bacteriophages, etc.) The successful candidate will be expected to identify microbiome-related biomarkers involved in the pathogenesis and/or improvement or exacerbation of disease states, which could lead to the development of therapeutic and/or preventive medicine. The RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) aims to understand the general principles of organismal temporal dynamics throughout the lifespan from birth to death, including aging. We are seeking to recruit women Team Leaders (principal investigators) who conduct advanced research based on the analysis of the biomolecular dynamics, behavior, and structure, to elucidate the fundamental principles of biological phenomena. In recent years, it is becoming increasingly important in the field of molecular and cell biology to understand life phenomena by seamlessly bridging together molecules and cells, while taking into account their hierarchical and dynamic nature. There is a demand for researchers who can lead research to understand essential cellular phenomena and architecture at the molecular/atomic level. We encourage proposals incorporating cell biology approaches (e.g. single-molecule imaging), computational approaches (e.g. molecular dynamics), and synthetic approaches (e.g. molecular design), and structural biology approaches (e.g. cryo-electron microscopy). Creative and original proposals that integrate other cutting-edge approaches are also welcome.

BDR provides early-career Principal Investigators (PIs) with an excellent environment for their independent research, including internationally competitive start-up packages (approximately 20 million JPY; negotiable as needed) and annual research funds (more than 20 million JPY per year) as well as mentoring by experienced senior BDR PIs. New PIs will be provided with approximately 150 m2 of dedicated space for their laboratory and will also have the use of common equipment areas for sample preparation and protein analysis. All BDR researchers have access to cutting-edge facilities such as cryo-electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, supercomputers such as Fugaku and MDGRAPE-4A, as well as facilities for various animal models, mouse genome engineering, multi-scale imaging, and omics. PIs will also have opportunities for active collaborations with medical institutions and industry, and for mentoring graduate students through several joint graduate school programs with affiliated graduate schools. Job description: The International Research Center for Medical Sciences (IRCMS) was established in 2015 as the center of excellence in Kumamoto University for world-class research in life sciences through the internationalization of its research environment and the establishment of global collaborations. The Center features an open lab layout with few walls and partitions between labs to facilitate communication among scientists. English is the official language for all seminars and lab meetings to promote international scientific discourse. The laboratory of Proteostasis in Stem Cell was newly establshed in 2021. We conduct research in hematology (especially hematopoietic stem cell biology and erythropoiesis) and fetal development. In this particular project, the successful candidate is expected to actively conduct our ongoing projects investigating roles of maternal environment in fetal organ formation. The lab is a part of International Research Center for Medical Sciences (IRCMS), so that the researcher will have a full access to our core facility and common research activities.

Available positions: Postdoctoral fellow (1-2 positions), up to 3 years. The successful candidate is expected to start as soon as possible.

Qualifications needed for this position: Applicants need to hold Ph.D degree (when starting). It is desired to have experiences working in the life science field, holding skills to handle animal models (mice), and sufficient communication skills in English.
Following experiences could be advantages:having studied in hematology field; skills to use flow cytometers; skills to perform histological analyses.
