At the Vietnam Research Station, Center for Infectious Disease Research in Asia and Africa, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University, we have been conducting basic research on infectious diseases such as emerging/reemerging infectious diseases investigating genomic sequences, pathogenicity, epidemiological key factors, etc. In addition to conducting fieldwork, we conduct pathogen isolation, serological surveys, etc., to reveal characteristics of pathogens and risks on public health.
Our department conducts research on emerging/reemerging infectious diseases in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam under the AMED (Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development) program. We would like to recruit a researcher who will stay at the Nagasaki University Vietnam Research Station in Hanoi to promote research on infectious diseases.

We are currently recruiting a researcher to work as an Assistant Professor/Research fellow in the AMED Program "Study on Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases in Vietnam" at the Nagasaki University Vietnam Research Station in the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), Hanoi, Vietnam.

The appointee will support both domestic and international collaborators including our laboratory staffs at the Vietnam Research Station, conducting the appointee's own research projects. Therefore, in the selection process, we will check the experience of virological/microbiological, molecular biological, and epidemiological analyses and fieldwork; however, we will mainly evaluate the communication ability in various collaboration research and motivation on research outside the appointee's area of expertise.

Research Field and Overview
RIKEN's research is based on comprehensiveness and interdisciplinarity, and with free thinking as its basic philosophy, RIKEN promotes research that goes beyond the boundaries of conventional research fields, while at the same time responding to the needs of society from a strategic perspective.
RIKEN invites applications for the position of Team Leader (Principal Investigator) to serve in a leadership position in the following research area. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing research projects from a medium-to-long-term perspective.
Field: Research on plant-microbiota interactions
The successful candidate will lead a research team that focuses on the understanding of key factors involved in plant-microbiota interactions. The resulting research is expected to develop digital transformation of multi-omics data on plant, microbe, and soil in the ecosystem. Interdisciplinary and cutting-edge technologies leading to integrated models of biogeochemical cycle, plant growth, and environmental impact are highly anticipated for efficient food and biomaterial production.

Research field
The RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) aims to understand the general principles of the temporal dynamics unfolding within living organisms throughout their lifespan, from development and birth to aging and death. Our interdisciplinary approaches to address this overarching theme include cell biology, molecular biology, structural biology, computational science, imaging, multi-omics, theory, stem cell biology, organoids, and the use of diverse animal models.

We are seeking to recruit a Team Leader (principal investigator) to conduct advanced research to elucidate the fundamental principles of biological phenomena at molecular scales. In recent years, life science research fields exploring molecular and cellular scales have reached a major crossroads, with increasing importance being placed on research efforts bridging molecules and cells while taking into account their hierarchical and dynamic nature. There is a demand for researchers who can lead research that aims to unveil and understand fundamental cellular phenomena and architecture at the molecular and atomic levels. We encourage proposals that include advanced research and technological developments in structural biology, particularly using cryo-electron microscopy.

- Opportunities provided by BDR -
BDR provides early-career Principal Investigators (PIs) with an excellent environment for their independent research, including internationally competitive start-up packages (approximately 20 million JPY; negotiable as needed) and annual research funds (more than 25 million JPY per year) as well as mentoring by experienced senior BDR PIs. New PIs will be provided with approximately 150 m2 of dedicated space for their laboratory and will also have the use of common equipment areas for sample preparation and protein analysis. All BDR researchers have access to cutting-edge large-scale instruments such as cryo-electron microscopy, cryo-FIB/SEM, NMR spectroscopy, supercomputers such as Fugaku and MDGRAPE-4A. There are also facilities for omics, multi-scale imaging, mouse genome engineering and access to diverse animal models. PIs will also have opportunities for active collaborations with medical institutions and industry, and for mentoring graduate students through several joint graduate school programs with affiliated graduate schools. For more information, please visit theĀ BDR website / PI recruitment introduction.

RIKEN is actively undertaking initiatives to promote gender equality and diversity and moving forward to establish a more diverse and vibrant research environment.
The working language for all discussions open to BDR members is English.

Applications must arrive no later than noon, November 30, 2023 (Japan Standard Time)

Start of employment
Negotiable (After July 1, 2024)
