2.Research Field and Overview:
RIKEN's research is based on comprehensiveness and interdisciplinarity, and with free thinking as its basic philosophy, RIKEN promotes research that goes beyond the boundaries of conventional research fields, while at the same time responding to the needs of society from a strategic perspective.

RIKEN invites applications for the position of Team Leader (Principal Investigator) to serve in a leadership position in the following research area. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing research projects from a medium-to-long-term perspective.

Specific Research Field: Organoid life science
Organoid life science offers tremendous potential for applications, ranging from contributions to fundamental sciences such as developmental biology, to practical implementations in regenerative medicine. This recruitment invites applications from researchers across a broad spectrum of the organoid and stem cell fields. We are seeking candidates capable of leading these fields and serving as central contributors to the center's research over the medium to long term.

Examples of relevant research include:

 -Utilizing organoid technology to recapitulate organogenesis in vitro, greatly enhancing opportunities for observation and manipulation, and establishing powerful tools for basic scientific research.
 -Investigating the diversity and commonalities of life through comparative approaches across various animal species, with the ultimate goal of advancing our understanding of humans.
 -Conducting studies from a life-cycle perspective, encompassing the continuum from birth to death and to the next generation, and contributing to the ability to manipulate these processes.
 -Reproducing developmental processes, pre-disease states, and disease states in vitro, contributing to advancements in reproductive and regenerative medicine from a societal perspective, thereby addressing social issues such as declining birth rates and promoting medical innovation.
 -Advancing stem cell research that supports organoid studies.
 -Engaging in research that leads the field internationally and contributes to the advancement of humanity, regardless of the examples above.

3.Qualification:
Applicants must be conducting outstanding research in organoid/stem cell research fields and have the ability to lead the above research field internationally. We welcome applicants of all nationalities.

RIKEN is currently accepting applications for the FY 2026 Special Postdoctoral Researcher (SPDR) Program, from young, creative, independent researchers who will be a powerful force in furthering RIKEN’s research activities.

Research fields:
Mathematical Sciences (pure mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, information science, artificial intelligence, etc.), Physics I (particle, nuclear, astrophysics, etc.), Physics II (condensed matter, etc.), Chemistry, Biology (cell biology, developmental biology, plant biology, structural biology, microbiology, imaging, measuring, basic neuroscience, etc.), Medical Science (brain medical science, immunology, oncology, genome science, etc.) and Engineering that relate to research being conducted at RIKEN.

Salary and benefits:

  • Annual salary paid in monthly installments of 550,000 yen (gross amount).
  • Commuting allowance (actual cost up to maximum of 55,000 yen per month)
  • Housing allowance (partial payment of rent)
  • Research budget: 1,000,000 yen per year. In addition, upon review, a maximum of 1,000,000 yen in total can be provided up to two times during the three-year SPDR term.
    The amount for the first fiscal year and the last fiscal year is allotted on a pro-rata basis depending on the month in which the SPDR starts working at RIKEN.

Job Description
By fostering collaboration among multiple laboratories specializing in organoid research, we aim to advance the development of mini-organs with complex morphologies from stem cells and the construction of integrated biological systems. In partnership with various research groups, researchers will tackle the following key challenges:

1.Formation of complex organoids by mimicking developmental environments in vitro

2.Construction of novel in vitro models for connecting different organoids

3.Maturation of organoids through vascular induction

Dr. Baohong Zhao's laboratory at Cornell University Medical School, an Ivy League university in Manhattan, New York, is recruiting two postdoctoral fellows with full scholarships ($72,000/year) and a visiting PhD student (stipend $30,000/year).
Two NIH funded postdoctoral positions and a visiting PhD student position are immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Zhao (https://baohongzhaolab.com; https://gradschool.weill.cornell.edu/faculty/baohong-zhao, https://www.hss.edu/research-staff_zhao-baohong.asp) at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Weill Medical College of Cornell University in the upper east side, Manhattan, New York City.

Dr. Zhao obtained her PhD degree in Japan and established her lab in US. Dr. Zhao’s lab has had a few very successful Japanese trainees. She welcomes and is pleased to work with Japanese trainees.

The postdoctoral fellows and students can choose projects from the below two directions:

1) Identification, function and regulation of bone marrow skeletal stem/progenitors in physiological and pathological settings;
Recent publication: Bone marrow AdipoQ-lineage progenitors are a major cellular source of M-CSF that dominates bone marrow macrophage development, osteoclastogenesis and bone mass. eLife, 2023;12:e82118. PMID: 36779851

2) Inflammatory regulation of macrophage polarization and differentiation into osteoclasts in osteoimmunology field, an exciting interdisciplinary research field linking bone biology and immune system.
Recent publication: TGFβ reprograms TNF stimulation of macrophages towards a non-canonical pathway driving inflammatory osteoclastogenesis. Nature Communications, 2022; 13(1), 3920. PMID: 35798734

  • We apply cutting edge cellular and molecular techniques including RNAseq, ATACseq, ChIPseq and scRNAseq, and use various genetic mouse models to accomplish the study.
  • Relevant publications: Nature Medicine, 15 (9):1066-71, 2009; Journal of Experimental Medicine, 209(2):319-34, 2012; Journal of Clinical Investigation, 124 (11):5057-73, 2014; Nature Communications, 9(1):4108, 2018; eLife, 2020; 9: e59659; Nature Communications, 13:3920, 2022; eLife, 2023 Feb 13;12:e82118.
  • The qualified candidate must have a recent Ph.D. (or a PhD student with 1-2 year experience) and/or M.D. in molecular and cellular biology, immunology, bone biology or a related field and have at least one first author research article.
  • Expertise in cellular and molecular techniques, such as Cloning, ChIP, IP, FACS, confocal microscopy and histology/immunofluorescence staining, as well as genetic mutant mouse breeding are required. Candidates with experience and interest in bioinformatics analysis, such as RNAseq analysis and/or analysis of scRNAseq using Seurat, are preferred. Fluent English communication skills are required. High level of motivation, problem-solving ability, responsibility, and independence are expected.
